Concept study: Plant section of a brown-coal-fired power plant

RWE Power AG is planning to construct a new combined-cycle power plant at the Goldenberg power plant site at Hürth near Cologne with integrated coal gasification unit (IGCC) including CO2 caption and storage (CCS). By the implementation of this first large-scale, environmentally friendly coal-fired power plant approx. 90% of the CO2 produced in the power plant process would be captured and stored.

Uhde Services is entrusted to conduct the concept study for the power plant section 'coal drying, fine grinding and storage'. The study will be used by RWE as a basis for subsequent decisions in connection with the construction of the new combined-cycle power plant. The basic design of the plant section includes a fluid-bed drying system arranged in two lines with internal waste heat utilisation (WTA) as well as fine grinding and intermediate storage of the dry brown coal.

The construction of this new brown-coal-fired power plant with a planned gross output of approx. 450 MW is in the planning stage, the plant being scheduled to go on stream by the end of 2015.
